Proposed Action for next steps for the Occupy Ottawa Movement as suggested from 4 break out groups during GA - Nov. 25
Group 1:
- Politicize and publicize the movement, maybe through publication
- Can still occupy space through direct actions or other activities
- We do not have the ability to continue the camp, especially through the winter
- Start process for finding a physical space for occupy that may include a soup kitchen or some sort of activity like that
- Tighten the organization, then fundraising afterwards
- Formal debate forum online and in person that respects the ga and occupy Ottawa and its processes
- Reform bilingualism and increase accessibility
- Increase relations with the Algonquin people that may include some discussion of a physical space
Group 2:
- Continue symbolic occupations as Direct actions
- Find an office space for meetings possibly with a kitchen
- Possible re-occupation in spring, only if logistics are worked out first
- Feed the GA
Group 3:
- Re-occupying in the spring, spending winter months exploring options and dealing with lessons learned in the last 5 weeks
- Discussed immediate response to the eviction by pursuing legal oprions and also saying that we don’t recognize he NCCs right to the land
- Agree with idea of finding office space for us to present a permanent location for people to meet
- Continuing with things like marches and coming up with creative ideas to makes our presence known, idea to use other sense such as smell might be able to be worked in
- Discussed unity in the movement, important to pull together all of us, no one excluded, no one not listened to, deal with finances in a proper way
- Recommend that we set up a permanent site around the fountain, known as the information tent, collapse it in the evening and rise it in the morning, always have someone tending to it
Group 4:
- Occupying in principle as essential. This is how we solicit the public and how we can engage in their support whether it is financial or material
- Consensus on the following: starting a mobile unit on a priority being, the finding of a safe legitimate space where equipment can be protected from physical circumstances: cold, police presence
- Pop-up flash camps when they have a clear message
- Seek through DA direct community support action. But not all DAs should be concerned with that public support
- Interest in idea of seeking greater population before restarting, pros and cons to this. Pros and cons to creating a long terms space indoor for shelter, and that a soup kitchen be a priority.
