Gourmet camping

To gain some credibility, you might want to adjust your list. Many hard-working families cannot afford to purchase exotic spices, produce that is out of season, etc. Like many other students, I survived for years on eggs, peanut butter, kraft dinner, tap water (not free trade coffee), day old bread, and pasta with either plain tomato sauce or soy sauce. Sometimes, when I was lucky, I could find beans and tuna on sale.
Miso? Lemon? Balsamic vinegar? Olive oil? Prepared hot foods? Are you joking? Clearly you have never been hungry .... not a little peckish, but actually hungry.
And BTW, there are shelters and other agencies to care for the homeless. They run programs with mental health experts, medical professionals, etc. and offer care and support that many people living on the streets need. they also monitir their condition, as many are addicts. All yu are doing is creating more problems by proving a place for them to crash with no professional care or monitoring, no rules vis a vis sobriety, etc. Congratulations. It won't be long until someone ODs in your 'camp' and you will be to blame.
Time to pack it up, join society and contribute. Then you can buy your own gourmet food instead of asking for handouts. The sad thing is you don't even realize how priviledged you are.
Spices
Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on
Tiny amounts of spices costing pennies can transform bland food into delicious meals. Why do you think they are most popular in poor countries?
Cost
Submitted by Getreal (not verified) on
For the price of 3 lemons you can buy enough pasta to feed a person for a week. Spices or no spices these people are out of touch elitists.

Crocodile tears for the poor and marginalized aside,Discrimination is allowing someone to guard the camp without letting them in the tent. I think the students drink a little less when they see suffering it causes when addiction sets in. They are part of the community and we treat them with dignity and respect.
The Entitled 00s

You "00s" don't allow the homeless to enter 'your' camping area? How about the rest of us mere citizens, banned as well?
Only the righteous protesters, those who know and do nothing but complain at the society the rest of us contribute to may enter the properties that we, but not they, pay for with our taxes.
Were you all born with these privileges, to take from others while whining about your lot, or did you do something (most likely nothing) to deserve this entitled existence?
No wonder your numbers and support levels are so small, regardless of your inflated egotistical assertions: You're just a bunch of spoiled brats.

you assumed a response from the perspective of your own arrogance. Occupy DOES take in and support the homeless, since Occupy also recognizes that the homeless are victims of the current political system.
Mental Illness
Submitted by GetReal (not verified) on
Mental illness and addiction disorders are illnesses and many homeless people suffer from these illnesses. It is incredible disrespectful to make a statement that the homeless are victims of the political system when they are in fact ill. Are individuals with MS, cancer, and heart disease also victims of the policial system? Of course not ... they have diseases, and this has nothing to do with politics or choice.
Like many people in this movement you have NO idea what you are talking about. That is why you have NO credibility.

You need spices and seasonings: "cumin! curry powder! miso!"
What the heck is that stuff, and why do you need it to protest in a public park?

THIS IS WHY WE FIGHT.............DEMANDS:
Start taking Global Warming more seriously. You compromise with big business and slow things down at every turn. You sell us Green Laundry Detergent in an attempt to placate our consciences, while you allow huge corporations to pollute with less regulation than ever before. You squash public transit systems and alternative energy sources, and then tell us all to go ride a bike. Stop blaming the masses and do your fucking jobs!
Regulate the electoral process. We will never get anywhere as a society while the people in charge are nothing but slaves to big business’ bottom line. How many of you politicians are in somebody’s pocket? Any politician in this practice is doing nothing less than their small part to destroy the planet. The fact that this is a perfectly legal practice is just another sign of how far the arm of profit over people reaches.
End the anti-union propaganda. If something which needs to fulfill a function gets broken, it needs to be fixed; NOT GONE. This age of average people being underpaid and having to live on borrowed money must come to an end. The inflation rate in Canada is approximately 3% every year; so if workers get a raise of any less than 3% annually, their wages are in reality going DOWN. Unions are being dismantled across the country; and we’re told in the media this is a good thing? Letting profit-hungry business do whatever they want is NEVER A GOOD THING. We need things like benefits, union rights, vacation time, paid family leave, and pensions to be a RIGHT; guaranteed under the law. Minimum wage should be a reflection of the minimum amount it takes for a person to live comfortably with the basic necessities of life, without having to rely on credit. Any less perpetrates this unfair trend of people living in debt while the CEOS come away with millions. We want only our fair share!!!
Make education a right. A person should not have to become $20,000 in debt just to get a job as a secretary. Our Educational Facilities are run as businesses! Education should be a RIGHT; NOT a privilege only for those with enough money. Once many of us get through school, we are indentured for LIFE. Amazing resources are going to waste as intelligent people are forced to take menial jobs because they couldn’t afford the schooling.
Stop the phony war on drugs!!! The Criminalization of substances does not get rid of the problem; it merely creates a dangerous underworld of gangs, murderers, and organized crime. If a person is addicted to a substance, jail time only makes them more damaged, more isolated, and more disgruntled. You cut funding for rehabs and detoxes, and then punish addicts who have no way out. This HAS to stop.
Stop the criminalization of poverty! Instead of dealing with the poverty problem by building more affordable housing, you give out tickets to homeless people sitting on the sidewalk! If you really want to help the poverty problem, end this vicious cycle of poor-to-jail-to-poorer, and create better, more EFFECTIVE social programs to help people. We need more subsidized housing, more rehabs and detoxes, and more free education.
No one is above the law. That’s what we’ve always been told growing up. Yet in the last decade, we’ve seen countless wealthy people getting away with well-known and MASSIVE crimes. If you want to show the people that you’re on their side, start by arresting George W. Bush. Start by prosecuting the large businesses and politicians who, despite the fact that their crimes are well known, have had to deal with NOTHING in the way of consequence.
Investigate the 9/11 attacks. We need an independent investigation to deal with all the inconsistencies in the official report. This is not some crazy conspiracy theory; the inconsistencies are MASSIVE and backed by scientists, experts, and Ground Zero firefighters. DO something about it!
Open up the poles to new people! Our politics are dominated by all older white males from the same damn backgrounds. It doesn't matter who we choose if they're all paid off before they can get in the running. No wonder less and less people are voting!!! We need more diversity, more honesty, and more WOMEN in politics. The idea that inequal treatment for women is a thing of the past is a MYTH. Women are the exception in politics; not the rule. In addition, Obama was nothing more than a token black man put in place to placate a population about to revolt; his administration is the most Wall-Street dominated than any President in history. He was a lie, and we are ANGRY about this deception. We want real heroes!!!
Regulate the media. Our media is a sad joke; reporting only what their wealthy owners want them to report. It is unfair to women, poor people, and anybody who tries to take a stand. The media affects our view of the world around us; and helps young people to find an identity. To brush it off as if it doesn't affect us is a tragic mistake.
These demands need to be taken seriously. The time for action is NOW
Your Demands
Submitted by 61and still working (not verified) on
If you want your demands met and want to change the political system why don't you just form your own political party. You could call it "The 99% Party". You can then run a candidate in every riding and they will all win easily because they will have 99% of the vote. If you want more women represented in parliament they simply have to run for your party and they will obviously be elected as there are more women voters than men. The great thing about this plan is that the cost of running in the election will be minimal as you won't need to advertise since you automatically have the support of 99%. The only possible flaw in this plan is that you will have to get off your asses and vote!

You need a prescription for an EpiPen. It is not something you can get OTC.
Also, you should be more self-sufficient so as to be role models on how your revolution will proceed. If you can't even feed yourselves or supply your own feminine hygiene items, you have a MAJOR problem with credibility.

How about you get your funding from your own pockets? How about you pay for a license to use the park first, a license to hold a rally, they pay for your own food, clothing etc.
You are not a legitimate organization, nor a charity, even if you are claiming to be charity cases.
And if you dont have the money to support your own cause, then get a job. McDonalds on Rideau is always hiring, all shifts, offers higher than minimum wage salary, full benefits, free meals. You could afford to then buy your own supplies.
Or...sell that expensive laptop and smart phone you use to surf all day, and invest it into the camp.

The role model that the donations request lists evoke are the Buddhist cultures that support those who become monks and nuns on behalf of the spiritual development of all people. In such cultures it is considered an honour, a privilege, and a karmic opportunity to help those who dedicate their time and efforts to the uplifting of all beings. We are grateful to the Occupiers who live out this stage of (R)evolution with all its discomforts and challenges while adhering to the guidelines of non-violence and direct democratic process, as best as flawed mortals can. Much ingenuity, compassion and learning is going on at the Camps. What a wonderful alternative to the deadly hand of the Harper regime and his ilk...

It is you people that give a bad name to democracy. You make the world want to get rid of free speech. What you are doing is absolutely useless, it will not make a difference in society at all, all you guys do is disrupt society and you think that something will come out of it. I hope the police beat you guys when they formally evict you in the coming weeks.
Disagree with you that the free speech is bad

Hi, I'm not a protester. Agree our banking regulations probably
saved us from the mess that the Americans are experiencing. The Americans had similar regulations but apparently removed them over the course of many years.
My questions to the protesters is this: Do you vote. Are you willing to use you vote collectively to force the mainstream to move in what you consider to be the "right" direction
Why don't these web pages have clear concrete actions practical suggestions to improve things.
If you compare yourselves to the tea party, you seem to be failing. They are willing to vote.
That said, a right to speak exists. I disagree with anybody saying you don't have it. I'm neutral on this issue. Convince me that you guys have something intelligent to say.
As an example, I dislike death. I had been thinking of "occupying" the churches to protest against death. Death is bad and it affects 100% of humans rather than just 99%. Everybody hates it. Thing is, I can't seem to get buy in. Hospitals on the other hand, get donations.

I in this instance think the the end justifies the means. If it makes you feel better the majority of the"food" the corporations process is killing us,feeding without providing nourishment, stunting out life span, overpackaged, over salted, chalk full of preservatives, full of sugar and fat, covered in pesticides, genetically bastardized, and far from fresh. we have been turned from omnivores to scavengers as most of what we eat now is weeks,or even years old. Food for thought...nes pas?

How are you prepared to take part in the fight for government-sponsored sustainable agriculture? Are you going to go get a degree in Food Science or Public Health? You could help more by doing something practical like get a law degree and working from the inside ti change policy. It's not supposed to be up to the consumers to change policy, it is supposed to be up to the government to support this change. ie. Ontario government changing school menus and banning fast food and pop. That is effective change, not you deciding not to buy KFC. Smarten up.
Your solution is the government tells us what and where we eat?

This government has no business banning food that tastes a little like a dictatorship. Talk about leaving a bad taste in your mouth. How about demanding fresh fruit and veg be tax free? lower longterm medical costs we all Profit
Not subsidizing unhealthy food

It's not about banning unhealthy food but the government shouldn't subsidize unhealthy food or enable corporations to market it to children in schools.
The US House of Representatives has just voted to categorize french fries and pizza as "vegetables" with respect to the 11 billion dollar a year school lunch program. This was a direct result of intensive lobbying by the frozen food industry and is a prime example of the dysfunctional politics in the US and the counterproductive influence of corporate money on the US political process.
Potatoes are veggies, ya know
Submitted by Mr. Potatohead (not verified) on
Neil: Your comment: "The US House of Representatives has just voted to categorize french fries and pizza as "vegetables""
According to Wikipedia, the potato IS a vegetable: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegetable
Regarding pizza, as long as it's a veggie pizza, it contains no meat, just veggies and flour. Even a pepperoni pizza has less meat that tomato sauce and possibly other veggie toppings (green peppers, onions, mushrooms, mmmm!), so according to food labeling regulations, would be a vegetable product.
