This article has caused considerable controversy within Occupy but we have to remember that we live in a democracy, flawed and unrepresentative as it is, and change will only come with the consent of the people. Alienating a majority of the public by tolerating unneccesary violence is counterproductive.
If you think there is any viable alternative to democratic governance try living in an anarchy for a while and see if you survive for long.
